In order to convert AC power to DC power, we use AC-DC converters.
AC power is generated by power plants in the form of a sine wave, with a frequency of 50 or 60 Hz, depending on the region. This AC power is then transmitted through power lines to reach households and businesses. However, many electronic devices require a steady DC voltage to operate. This is where AC-DC converters come in.
AC-DC converters, also known as rectifiers, are electrical devices that convert AC power to DC power. The most common type of AC-DC converter is the single-phase full-wave rectifier. This type of rectifier uses a diode to convert the negative portion of the AC sine wave to a positive DC voltage. The output of the rectifier is then filtered using a capacitor to remove any remaining AC components, resulting in a steady DC voltage.
Another type of AC-DC converter is the three-phase full-wave rectifier. This type of rectifier uses three diodes to convert the negative portion of each phase of the AC sine wave to a positive DC voltage. While AC-DC converters are essential for many electronic devices, they also have limitations. Additionally, AC-DC converters generate harmonic currents, which can cause interference with other electronic devices.
